[post_content] => Dragons Instructors are what make our programs magical. So we’re going to feature a few excerpts from their letters of introduction this week on our Instagram feed.

Beginning with Erick Torres, from Guatemala...

come ready to learn and unlearn as much as you can...
“I have been working with Dragons since 2014. My passion and my work is focused on working with native and heirloom seeds from Mesoamerica, the Mayan region; environmental awareness; Native Spiritual Knowledge and designing spaces to grow food for family and community sustainability. [...] Guatemala has great opportunities to explore nature, it has the most beautiful lake in the world called Atitlan Lake, or T’zunun Ya’ in Maya T’zutujil language, which means: “House of Birds.” There are 3 volcanoes that are active every day in Guatemala and it’s incredible to see them in action. There are about 32 volcanoes in the whole country. [...] Guatemala has some of the largest indigenous populations in the American Continent which makes it a very special and powerful place, you will be able to experience and constantly interact and learn from the Mayan people and culture every day. There are about 23 Mayan languages around the country and every Mayan community has its own traditional clothes, their own special dishes and celebrations throughout the year.  With all that diversity, cultural richness, beautiful people and nature also comes different realities and ways to see and understand life. If something makes Dragons different from other types of programs abroad it’s that our programs will challenge you in many ways, from not having the same comfortability that you maybe are used to, to challenging your ways to see and understand life as a whole; meet friends who can share their different perspectives, who can awaken us to topics that we are not yet aware of, people who will inspire a change in us as individuals and as members of a society. So, bring your best energy, your openness to get in to the unknown, open your heart and mind, and come ready to learn and unlearn as much as you can...”

Read Eric’s full letter of introduction on the Yak board. And if you’re inspired, there’s ONE last spot left on the summer program in Guatemala that Eric (and 2 co-leaders) will be leading!

We are so excited for our current #worldofdragons instagram takeover hosted by a very special and multi-talented member of Dragons community: Christy Sommers. For those who don’t know her, you’re in for a treat. Here’s her introduction and one of her images and captions from the week. Head over to Dragons Instagram feed to see the rest!

“I’m Christy (@talkingcentipede), and I led my first Dragons program nearly a decade ago—the first ever West Africa semester in Senegal and Guinea in the fall of 2008. At the time, I thought it would just be a one-off experience, and that I would then go into the career in international education policy that I had been planning on. Why am I still here? Well, the shortest answer to that question is Liz Connor and Mbouillé Diallo, my co-instructors on that fateful first course. Liz and Mbouillé modeled a life approach centered around building compassion and connection and a deep understanding of the world. Learning alongside our awesome group of students, the course of my life shifted in a new direction. I fell in love with experiential, cross-cultural education as a means of constantly learning about and engaging with some of the most fascinating places in the world. Since then, I’ve worked for Dragons as an instructor on our courses in Senegal, Madagascar, Rwanda, India, and Nepal, and as an administrator in the Dragons office managing programs in those countries.”

Here's Christy's fourth posted image and story behind it:

Captioned: "Dragons student Felicia Jing learns how to weave tradition baskets on our course in Rwanda in 2013. Over the course of those 6 weeks, we explored 3 national parks, climbed up a 12,000 foot volcano, gawked at Rwanda’s spectacular wildlife and beautiful vistas, spent time in a rural homestay in my co-instructor’s home village, heard the stories of Congolese refugees, participated in Rwanda’s monthly community work day, visited NGOs working on everything from wildlife conservation to peace and conflict resolution, and so much more. After all of this exploring and learning, there was a lot to reflect on. Each of our students remarked that Rwanda wasn’t like they had expected; there is just so much more nuance than we are able to imagine before we experience a place first-hand. Even my Rwandan co-instructor remarked that working as a Dragons instructor has changed his perceptions and understanding of his own country through facilitating learning for our student groups." *This is the fourth post of the #worldofdragons takeover by @talkingcentipede.

If you haven't already seen it, we've recently been featuring Dragons instructors and their amazing imagery and words as they take us around the world in what we’re calling our #worldofdragons Instagram Takeovers.

An Instagram takeover, in short, is having a person (or group) takeover Dragons Instagram account temporarily in order to more directly share awesome worldly content with our Dragons community.

Our #worldofdragons Instagram Takeover goals are to:

  1. Highlight our global partners & community through in-the-field perspectives.
  2. Collaborate to share stories with our Alumni students & staff who are hungry to stay engaged with the world and Dragons community.
  3. Share Dragons experiences, culture, and character with new audiences.
  4. Encourage more diversity in perspectives represented by Dragons Instagram account.
Our FIRST #worldofdragons Instagram Takeover was hosted by Micah LeMasters @super_meubles . Micah has been working with Dragons since 2015. He works in Madagascar, Senegal, Indonesia, Nepal and India. He recently spent six weeks traveling in Myanmar and will return this summer with Dragons Myanmar summer abroad program. He grew up in Indiana.  Our SECOND #worldofdragons Instagram Takeover is still currently being hosted by Gregory Pettys (@gregorypettys ), one of Dragons wonderful Thailand AND Nepal instructors. Here’s some more words of introduction from Gregory: [caption id="attachment_152945" align="alignnone" width="566"] Photo by Gregory Pettys, Nepal.[/caption]

“For the next few days it is my great privilege to share with you a window into a part of the world that has become both my home and my office; Nepal and Thailand. I find both of these kingdoms fascinating, inspiring and absolutely filled with magic. I hope to honor these places well by sharing with you images of the people and places here (whom and where alumni students will be familiar with!) that have helped make me who I am today.”

After Gregory, we have Caleb Brooks and Christy Sommers on deck. Follow Dragons on Instagram to watch it all unfold! #instagramtakeover #worldofdragons #wheretherebedragons #dragonstakeover [post_title] => Instagram Takeovers by Dragons Instructors Featuring Photos from Around the World [post_excerpt] => If you haven't already seen it, we've recently been featuring Dragons instructors and their amazing imagery and words as they take us around the world in what we’re calling our #worldofdragons Instagram Takeovers...
