The inaugural Tufts Civic Semester cohort recently returned home!

Dragons is thrilled to partner with Tisch College in organizing Civic Semester and we are so happy to read these profound reflections from recent students on their experiences in Peru. Here's a snippet from the article, but head over to Tufts to read the full feature!

Yong Quan Tan, a Civic Semester fellow, was placed at Eco Huella, a family-owned farm focused on sustainable indigenous agriculture. His work involved daily farming duties, building greenhouses for high-altitude Andean communities and facilitating visits from local and international organizations.

“It was a time for me to understand the challenges faced by frontline communities … and the urgency for them to adjust and to change the way they work and they live their lives in order to confront [climate change],” Tan, a first-year, said.

Through his time at Eco Huella, Tan has learned more about the actions that can be taken against climate change.

“[I am] being more environmentally conscious … not just of our consumption habits … but also of a greater need for pushing back against factors that are contributing to climate change, and the power of us consumers [who] can decide what kind of choices companies can make to benefit the climate,” he said.

We're super excited to see and share this announcement from Tufts University.

Here's an excerpt from The Tuft's Daily article titled, Tufts Civic Semester to Offer Overseas Service Opportunities to Incoming First-Years:

"Civic Semester is intended to be embedded in the academic experience at Tufts,' McAndrew said.

The program is fully funded by tuition, and all financial aid that a student receives is applied to the Civic Semester, Dean of Tisch College Alan Solomont said.

“[The Civic Semester] really should be open to all students,” Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Jim Glaser said.

Students participating in the program will complete on-campus orientation with their fellow classmates in September, according to Glaser. Glaser expressed his belief that completing regular orientation on campus with students who are not participating in the program will be a positive experience.

“They will go through orientation with all of the students they come back to,” Glaser said. “The beauty of this is that it … allows students to have a full [orientation] experience.”

Tisch College partnered up with Where There Be Dragons, a well-known program provider for academic gap semesters and years, according to Solomont.

“[Tisch College] looked at all the programs who do this just to pick the best one,” Solomont said.

In the program’s first year, it will admit 25 students. However, Solomont said that there is room for growth in the program, saying that it could expand to 100 more students in future years."

Did you know that Dragons now offers College Study Abroad SUMMER programs in Bolivia and China?

Like all our College Study Abroad Programs, our approach to these new 4-week long summer offerings is to provide high-quality academic experiences in unconventional places. In addition to rigorous academic exploration, we learn by doing, travel like locals, live with families, and get dirty for the sake of discovery.

These programs offer college study abroad students the opportunity to dive into the heart of either Bolivia or China. We do so through language study, homestays, and workshops focused on pressing local and cultural issues. Students earn 4 semester credits in Spanish or Mandarin and receive a transcript from our School of Record. Both programs run from July 10 - August 8, 2019 and language learners at all levels are welcome to apply.

Here is a snapshot of each program:

Bolivia - 4-week Language and Cultural Exploration: Students expand their Spanish language abilities through interactive instruction, investigate Bolivian culture in an extended rural homestay, and learn first-hand from local communities. To learn more about the Dragons Bolivia summer program, visit the Bolivia Summer College Abroad Program page.

China - 4-week Language and Cultural Exploration: Students experience life in rural and urban China while improving their Mandarin language skills, engage in multiple homestays, and examine complex cultural issues. To learn more about the Dragons China summer program, visit the China Summer College Abroad Program page.

We hope you enjoy exploring these new options for college students! Feel free to be in touch with questions anytime.

Sincerely,

Cara Lane-Toomey and Shino Yoshen

[post_content] => Dragons partnered with Avenues: The World School to develop and run a Climate Change and Culture in Taiwan Program. They made a fantastic video of their course and time in Taiwan. Watch it below and definitely learn more about the program via this blog post. Here's an excerpt:

"On a recent Global Journeys program, a group of 9th and 10th graders looked closely at how climate change and sustainability relate to culture in Taiwan. Their investigation took them around the island, from the metropolis of Taipei to the tiny coastal village of Dulan, from Buddhist monasteries to urban recycling centers, remote permaculture farms to bustling night markets. Most memorably, the students spent four nights at a homestay with families from the indigenous Atayal community—a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the rhythms of the tribe’s daily life in the mountains (and pitch in on farm work) and learn how that way of life is being threatened by climate change."
