Cultural sensitivity is described as an awareness and acceptance of cultural differences and similarities without assigning them inherent value. This means that there is not necessarily a positive or negative, or right or wrong way to do something. Oftentimes, this is related to understanding a diverse range of cultures and includes factors like religion, ethnicity, race, national origin, language, or gender.

Indonesia Travel Abroad

Being a culturally sensitive traveler is of utmost importance, especially when traveling to areas of the world where people may live, work, eat, and look different than you. At Where There Be Dragons, we prioritize travel that holds great meaning where students can genuinely experience a different way of living all while learning about their passions and developing life skills.

Our Gap Year Programs and summer study abroad opportunities are designed to encourage students to step out of their comfort zones, immerse themselves in a new culture, and keep an open mind to learning and growing.

How to Travel with Cultural Sensitivity in Mind

When traveling, whether through a study program or as an individual, adapting to the culture provides immense benefit to both the traveler and the destination. Having cultural sensitivity in mind when traveling limits any impact on the local communities. Adapting to the culture is a way to accept the differences and show respect for the local community without placing assumptions or judgements on the experience. This is an important approach during learning service projects, language study, daily travel, homestays, trekking excursions, and beyond.

One of Where There Be Dragons core program values is that all students and teachers are travelers, not tourists. Our mission is to cultivate meaningful connections through intentional travel. We believe it is important that all programs are developed to promote immersive travel so students are able to experience the true day-to-day experience of those who live in that region.

Traveling with cultural sensitivity in mind is also greatly beneficial to the student or traveler. Immersive experiences provide greater opportunity to learn, grow, and step outside of one’s comfort zone. From language to daily travel to food to attire, adhering to the standards and traditions of the location has proven to be the ideal way to travel. This, we believe, is where the real magic starts to happen.
