New England Educator Sample Itinerary

The New England Educator Program is comprised of seven online sessions from early July to mid October as well as a group expedition July 12-19, which is described in greater detail below. During this 8-day portion of the program, participants gain new skills by experiencing first-hand the fundamental components of effective and safe global experiential education programming.

Day 1-2 Our group gathers 4 hour north of Portland, ME at Spencer Pond Camp, traditional lands of the Wabanaki Confederacy of First Nations Peoples. Set against towering white pine and fresh water in all directions, this sanctuary deep in the Maine wilderness provides us the space to frame our course and build a solid foundation for the journey to come. We focus on container building–both within our group, and as a skill development for our own work as global educators. We also begin to deepen our canoe skills and our relationship with the land that holds us.
Days 3-7 Departing our base camp, we shuttle to Lobster Stream and make our way to our first campsite on Lobster lake. Over the next four days we fall into an ancient rhythm of life, sleeping on the ground, rising with the sun, paddling for 3-4 hours each day against the rhythmic splash of paddles dipping the water, and spending our afternoons exploring, fishing, relaxing and engaged in conversations and workshops related to the themes of our program. During this expedition phase, we take time to explore in greater depth Dragons core curriculum for global education programming, and explore connections between our online modules featuring perspectives from throughout the Americas.
Day 8 Returning full circle to Spencer Camp, we take our final day for Transference—a curriculum for guided reflection, summation, and integration that leverages our group experience towards our work with students around issues of land relations, climate change, culture, and science.
