In-Field Communication & Tech Policies

Unplugged Travel: A Comprehensive Approach

One of most unique aspects of our programs is that students travel without personal smartphones or internet-enabled devices. In a time when constant connectivity is the norm, we offer something increasingly rare: the opportunity to unplug and experience the world with full attention and presence.

At the same time, we understand that communication back home is a normal and important part of the student experience.  Stepping away from phones can feel uncomfortable, but know that being unplugged doesn’t mean being completely disconnected. While programs are in the field, we have a comprehensive approach to communication where families receive updates, students can get in touch if needed, and our staff is in regular communication with instructors.

The Value of Unplugged Experiences

Why Tech Free

It’s not about what students are giving up, but rather what they gain when screens aren’t dominating their attention.

  • Real-World Connection When students unplug, they connect more deeply with their peers, host communities, and the world around them.
  • Independence & Confidence Without constant digital access, students learn to navigate the unfamiliar, solve problems together, and trust their own capabilities.
  • A Healthier Balance Time away from screens helps students rediscover the value of presence, and return to technology with greater intention and balance.

Communication With Home

During their program, students will have occasional opportunities to communicate with home either over phone or email. Students and staff will also proactively communicate with families via our Yak Board.

Management Team

Our administrative team maintains regular communication with all field staff. Dragons instructors carry appropriate communication equipment; if instructors need to reach us, they will be able to do so, and vice-versa. We will be in constant communication with both instructors and families if there are any student issues or emergencies that require additional attention.

Program Blog

The Yak Board is a digital group journal where students and staff share photos, stories, reflections, and group updates while on program. Instructors actively encourage students to share their experiences via the Yak Board with writing prompts and activities; however, we do not force or require students to post.

Access to Email & Phone Calls

Students can expect infrequent access to their email or phone calls when scheduling permits. Communication home is allowed and supported when appropriate to the itinerary and program context. Certain parts of the program are easier to facilitate direct communication home, although our instructors remain in continual contact throughout.
