Machu Picchu Travel Program in Peru

12 Days

From the Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest to the sacred expanse of Lake Titicaca to the highland deserts, Peru harbors some of the world’s most pristine ecosystems. This ecological wealth mirrors Peru's cultural diversity, with nearly sixty ethnic groups, including five million Quechua descendants of the Inca. This trip explores the depths and heights of Peru's environmental and cultural diversity.

A Journey into Ecological and Cultural Diversity

Unlike many Peru trips that travel only to the Andes, this trip traces Peru’s full cultural diversity. We will experience coastal ecosystems, where maritime economies have sustained communities for centuries, deep canyons, where Andean agriculture thrives on ancient terraces, and high-altitude plateaus, where Quechua-speaking communities practice traditional farming, weaving, and herding in a rhythm deeply tied to the seasons and cycles of nature. Our travel will immerse participants in both pre-Columbian traditions and also modern aspects of rural and urban Peru. We will reflect on how different communities navigate time, tradition, and change in a land shaped by deep histories and contemporary challenges.

Through hands-on activities, direct engagement with local communities, and focused discussions on sustainability, we will explore Peru’s ecosystems, cultural practices, and communities. We gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between environmental change, conservation, and cultural preservation.

Our Journey

Our journey begins near Arequipa in Caleta San Jose, a coastal haven. We venture to Colca Canyon, combining outdoor exploration with a focus on climate change. We hike through diverse ecosystems to observe Andean condor habitats, revealing environmental influences on this remarkable landscape. An immersive stay in the Samana community allows us to engage in traditional farming and crafts and connect with local families and their heritage amidst stunning nature.

A full day in Arequipa showcases its charm: explore the Santa Catalina Monastery, Plaza de Armas, and cathedral. We enjoy Misti volcano views from Yanahuara, browse vibrant local markets like San Camilo, and savor traditional Peruvian dishes.

Next, we fly to Cusco and transfer to Andahuaylillas, a town rich in colonial architecture and Andean character. We explore Andean baroque traditions through local art, cooking, and weaving workshops. We gain insights from NGOs on sustainable farming and community empowerment, plus learn about the Cusco Valley’s hidden mining sector. Short hikes bring us to the ancient Wari site Pikillacta and the Inca hydraulic systems at Tipón. We also visit the unique Q’eswachaka Inca Bridge and engage with local communities to delve into Andean agricultural, textile, and culinary practices.

Next, we take a train to visit the iconic Machu Picchu. Our trip concludes with a day in Cusco.
