12 Days

Indonesia is an archipelago spanning over 17,000 islands, hundreds of languages & cultures, and some of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world. This island nation is also the largest majority Muslim country in the world. It serves as a living example for the marriage of Islam, democracy, and religious tolerance. Through hands-on activities, cultural exchange, and immersive travel, students develop a deep relationship to the culture, artistic traditions, and people of Indonesia.

An Indonesian Art & Culture Odyssey

The city of Yogyakarta, located on Indonesia’s most populous island of Java, is known as the cultural, academic, and artistic heart of the country and is Dragons’ homebase in Indonesia. Here, we explore the fascinating history of colonial trade that has centered around the “Spice Islands” for millennia and given rise to a living tapestry of identity. Batik, Gamelan, Javanese dance, and shadow puppetry are thriving cultural and artistic practices in Yogyakarta, all deeply rooted in spiritual traditions from Hinduism through to modern day Islam.

Dragons has cultivated a network of artisans and experts who serve as teachers and mentors to our students. Excursions from Yogyakarta take us to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world and the Prambanan, a 9th century Hindu temple. Through hands-on activities, cultural exchange, and immersive travel, students develop a deep relationship to the culture, artistic traditions, and people of Indonesia.

Our Journey

After arriving in Yogyakarta, we travel to the peaceful village of Tembi. Amidst tropical greenery and rice fields, we begin Orientation by setting intentions, learning health and safety, and coming together as a group. We also study basic geography, history, culture, and language. On our final morning, we rise early to watch sunrise over volcanic peaks with the call to prayer echoing in the background.

Moving into Yogyakarta, or “Jogja,” we immerse ourselves in the island’s cultural and artistic heart, focusing on themes of art, religious symbolism, and identity. We explore bustling markets, the Sultan’s palace, and religious centers, and visit students at an Islamic boarding school. After a homestay briefing, we settle into welcoming host families.

Through small-group learning with local mentors, students experience Indonesian culture firsthand, creating art or developing skills such as cooking or music. Excursions take us to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a 9th-century Hindu temple.

We then head to the southern coast for our final days. Here, we learn the myth of Ratu Kidul, Queen of the Southern Sea, and take time to relax, reflect, and prepare to transfer lessons from Indonesia into our lives back home.
