A Custom School Program

12 Days

This program travels from East to West, tracing China’s development from Beijing to Kunming and ending in the Yi village of Damoyu. Along the way, students explore history, government, economy, arts, and the diverse cultures of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities. They also engage in hands-on experiences such as culinary arts, calligraphy, tea ceremonies, and martial arts.

Culture, Language, History

As Lao Tzu said, “a path traveled is no longer the same path, a road traveled is no longer the same road.” Old neighborhoods are replaced by skyscrapers, streets once filled with bicycles now jammed with cars, and monks read sutras on iPads while rural farmers commute to the city. New highways, rail lines, and airports are constantly under construction to keep up with 1.4 billion people on the move, reflecting China’s relentless pace of change.

This program goes beyond China’s ever-expanding cities to explore its diverse peoples and cultures across different landscapes. Students gain firsthand insight into local communities while engaging in immersive travel, language practice, and interdisciplinary study of modern Chinese history, economic development, society, and cultural traditions.

Our Journey

After arriving in Beijing, we board a private bus for a rustic guesthouse near a remote section of the Great Wall, where we are welcomed with warm hospitality and homemade Northeastern Chinese cuisine. Orientation and community building take place in the first 48 hours, followed by exploration of the Great Wall and Beijing’s major landmarks, including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and traditional hutong neighborhoods.

From Beijing, we fly to Kunming for a five-day homestay with Dragons host families, supporting cultural and language immersion through daily life, language study, and activities such as Chinese cuisine, kung fu, calligraphy, and traditional medicine. Students visit markets, temples, and parks while evenings are spent with host families, concluding with a farewell dinner.

We then travel to Damoyu, a Yi ethnic minority village, where life moves at a slower pace with sustainable agriculture and natural building. Students engage with villagers, participate in daily life, harvest vegetables, learn about permaculture, and prepare meals, concluding with reflection and a closing ceremony before departing from Kunming.
