8 Days

This program immerses students in the rich artistic heritage of Yunnan’s Dali region, the ancient capital of the 8th-century Nanzhao Kingdom. Through hands-on experiences like woodblock printing, indigo tie-dye, and silversmithing, students explore traditional ethnic arts, heritage preservation, and the impact of modernization. It’s a journey into the heart of Chinese artistry, where creativity flourishes and tradition comes alive in every masterpiece.

Traditional Ethnic Crafts and Living History

China is a land of constant transformation, where centuries-old neighborhoods make way for towering skyscrapers, bicycles share streets with sleek cars, and monks may chant from digital tablets. Rural families balance life between village and city, while new highways, railways, and airports are built seemingly everywhere to serve a population of 1.4 billion. To understand the forces shaping our world today, China cannot be ignored—its history, culture, and creativity have fascinated travelers, thinkers, and dreamers for generations.

This program takes students to Yunnan’s Dali region, once the thriving capital of the 8th-century Nanzhao Kingdom, to explore its vibrant artistic traditions. Through immersive, hands-on experiences—woodblock printing, indigo tie-dye, and silversmithing—students engage with both ancient techniques and modern approaches to cultural preservation, considering the balance between tradition and progress. It’s an opportunity to experience Chinese artistry firsthand, where creativity meets heritage and every craft tells a story.
