A Sample Private + Family Trip

Siem Reap at dusk

13 Days

Contemporary Cambodia is a place of optimism, creativity, art, entrepreneurship, and healing. There is far more to Cambodia than the iconic tourist sites—a profound depth hidden below the surface. This program takes students to that deeper level, peeling back the layers of an underexposed country to explore topics related to development, youth entrepreneurship, artistic creation, and re-imagined Khmer identity for a post-war generation.

A Hopeful Future Build on a Powerful Past

Cambodia is a country that is often essentialized by its past: a montage of ancient jungle temples, horrific persecution and genocide, and images of poverty used to evoke sympathy and international aid. While these realities in Cambodia constitute a powerful global perspective of the country, today Cambodia is a country determined to rewrite its own story for itself and the world.

This program begins in the booming capital of Phnom Penh before moving to the artistic and cultural hub of Battambang, spending time in homestays in Banteay Chmar, and ending with the temples of Angkor Wat. Throughout our time in Cambodia, we meet with inspiring youth who are choosing to define themselves by an optimistic future rather than a tumultuous past. We learn how art and traditions are integrated into a new way of life, and we observe how Cambodian youth engage with modern issues, such as mental health and economic instability, through reliance on Buddhist traditions and spiritual guidance. The heart of the program is a multi-day homestay where students learn through relationship-building and cohabitation.

Our Journey

We begin our journey in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Surrounded by the buzz of this rapidly growing urban center, we facilitate a series of group container building workshops that emphasize an open and inclusive culture, a reverence for the world around us, and training on important health, safety, language, and cultural considerations. Through interactive workshops and local visits, we learn more about the history of the Khmer Rouge regime and the genocide that took place in Cambodia from 1975-79.  We seek sanctuary in a quiet pagoda to learn more about Mahayana Buddhism and to receive a blessing for safe travel from the monks. As we round out our time in the capital, we will have the opportunity to meet with local entrepreneurs working in areas of mindful leadership, environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, education and/or the arts.

From Phnom Penh, we head to Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city and a hotbed of Khmer art and culture. We immerse ourselves in the artistic and cultural life of the city. Food is a very important part of Khmer culture and we will enjoy delicious and diverse meals in Battambang, from a tiny Chinese noodle shop to a set menu dinner at a social enterprise restaurant.

We travel to Banteay-Chhmar to begin our homestay, the heart of our experience in Cambodia. Banteay Chmar is an impressive archeological site from around the 12th century and also a contemporary Khmer farming community that has developed a well-established community tourism program focused on immersion and education. Upon arrival, we spend time getting to know the landscape through a structured scavenger hunt, and gather to meet with our community hosts. Over the next several days, we fall into a slow rhythm of life wherein we participate in tasks of farming, cooking and learning about Khmer society and culture.

After saying goodbye, we travel to Siem Reap, home to the famous Angkor Wat complex. Here, we have the opportunity to participate in cultural exchange activities with local college-age students who are part of NGO programs. We end our program with an exploration of Angkor Wat, and an intentional reflection of our time together in Cambodia.
