The Next Generation

A Custom School Program

13 Days

Contemporary Cambodia is a place of optimism, creativity, art, entrepreneurship, and healing. There is far more to Cambodia than the iconic tourist sites—a profound depth hidden below the surface. This program takes students to that deeper level, peeling back the layers of an underexposed country to explore topics related to development, youth entrepreneurship, artistic creation, and re-imagined Khmer identity for a post-war generation.

A Hopeful Future Build on a Powerful Past

Cambodia is a country that is often essentialized by its past: a montage of ancient jungle temples, horrific persecution and genocide, and images of poverty used to evoke sympathy and international aid. While these realities in Cambodia constitute a powerful global perspective of the country, today Cambodia is a country determined to rewrite its own story for itself and the world.

This program begins in the booming capital of Phnom Penh before moving to the artistic and cultural hub of Battambang, spending time in homestays in Banteay Chmar, and ending with the temples of Angkor Wat. Throughout our time in Cambodia, we meet with inspiring youth who are choosing to define themselves by an optimistic future rather than a tumultuous past. We learn how art and traditions are integrated into a new way of life, and we observe how Cambodian youth engage with modern issues, such as mental health and economic instability, through reliance on Buddhist traditions and spiritual guidance. The heart of the program is a multi-day homestay where students learn through relationship-building and cohabitation. This is an experiential cultural immersion that introduces students to new environments where they develop self-knowledge, leadership skills, and a better understanding of our global community.

Our Journey

We begin our journey in Phnom Penh, surrounded by the buzz of this rapidly growing urban center. Here, we facilitate group workshops that emphasize openness, inclusivity, reverence for the world, and training on health, safety, language, and cultural considerations. Through interactive visits, we learn about the Khmer Rouge regime and the genocide from 1975–79. We also seek sanctuary in a quiet pagoda to learn about Mahayana Buddhism and receive a blessing from the monks. As we round out our time in the capital, we meet local entrepreneurs working in mindful leadership, sustainability, women’s empowerment, education, and the arts.

From Phnom Penh, we head to Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city and a hub of Khmer art and culture. We immerse ourselves in the city’s artistic life and enjoy meals ranging from tiny noodle shops to social enterprise restaurants.

We then travel to Banteay Chhmar for our homestay, the heart of our experience. An impressive 12th-century archaeological site and contemporary farming community, Banteay Chhmar has a well-established tourism program focused on immersion and education. Upon arrival, we explore the landscape through a scavenger hunt before meeting our homestay families. Over the next several days, we settle into a slower rhythm, participating in farming, cooking, and learning about Khmer society and culture.

After saying goodbye to our hosts, we travel to Siem Reap. Here, we join cultural exchanges with local students involved in NGO programs. We end our program exploring Angkor Wat and reflecting on our time in Cambodia.

Together, we’ll design a program that’s cohesive, purposeful, and fully supported from start to finish—never a collection of tourist stops or disconnected activities. We’re ready when you are.
