13 Days

This program offers an immersive exploration into Bolivia’s dynamic response to the challenges of globalization, with a focus on Indigenous rights, community resilience, Spanish language learning, and cultural preservation. Bolivia, with its rich history of political activism and diverse Indigenous populations, offers a unique opportunity to understand how local communities are navigating modern pressures while upholding their traditions. Participants will engage with grassroots organizations, local activists, and community leaders to explore how these groups are advocating for increased sovereignty and justice.

Exploring Culture and Community Resilience

Bolivia is renowned for its rich cultural diversity and dramatic landscapes. From the towering Andes mountains to the vast salt flats of Uyuni, it is a country of striking contrasts and vibrant traditions. Home to many Indigenous communities, including the Quechua, Aymara, and Guaraní, Bolivia reflects both deep-rooted traditions and dynamic change. Despite its wealth of natural resources, the nation has faced challenges such as poverty, political instability, and the pressures of globalization. At the same time, Bolivia has emerged as a leader in Indigenous rights, environmental activism, and social movements. Its unique history and current development make it an ideal place to study the complex dynamics of globalization in Latin America.

Throughout the journey, students will learn firsthand about Bolivia’s ongoing social movements. From Cochabamba’s historic struggle for water rights to the vibrant arts scene in El Alto, the program offers opportunities for deep cultural immersion, including homestays with local families. Interactions with Quechua, Aymara, and Afro-Bolivian communities will provide a richer understanding of the country’s cultural diversity and the resilience of its people in shaping their future.

Our Journey

Our journey begins in Cochabamba, Bolivia, a hub for community-based learning and grassroots development. After settling into an eco-retreat, we will build group cohesion, review safety, and align program goals.

From there, we travel to Tiquipaya for a homestay at Finca Pollen, an organic farm. Students join daily life, practice Spanish, and learn Andean Quechua traditions. Afternoons include visits with authors and activists in Cochabamba, focusing on agroecology, community organization, and local artisans.

Bidding farewell to our homestay families, we head to La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital. Our time begins in its sister city, El Alto, where we engage with Teatro Trono, a grassroots arts group using theater for political expression. We will also explore El Alto’s history and traditions while visiting La Paz’s street art, museums, and cultural centers.

Next, we journey to the Yungas, a lush subtropical region. In Tocaña, an Afro-Bolivian community, we learn about coca and coffee production and visit the Museo de Cultura Afroboliviana, which highlights Afro-Bolivian history, contributions, and vibrant music, including a traditional Saya performance. Finally, we continue to Coroico to reflect on and synthesize our Bolivian experiences.
