The Hidden Kingdom

A Custom School Program

9 Days

The Kingdom of Bhutan, nestled high in the Himalayas between China and India, is a land of intentionally limited tourism where Gross National Happiness and environmental conservation take precedence over economic growth and extractive industries. Long a source of fascination for the outside world, Bhutan offers profound perspectives and alternative cultural realities to explore and consider. In this program, students examine key global issues related to development models, environmental sustainability, cultural survival, and quality of life.

Redefining Success and Development

This course weaves together the unique interplay of land, community, and faith through meaningful stays in locally run guesthouses, hikes with stunning Himalayan views, and engagement with community leaders. Students can expect their preconceived notions of “success” and “development” to be challenged as they encounter different societal values, relationships with nature, and approaches to pursuing happiness within an interconnected community.

This immersive program introduces students to new environments where they cultivate self-knowledge, leadership skills, and personal connections to long-held Himalayan traditions. Through experiential activities and relationship-building with local hosts, students gain firsthand insight into the real issues people face across the globe and the many ways cultures address the inherent dilemmas of the human condition. They meet with community members to discuss economic development, education, conservation, and models of sustainability—all while learning to navigate their inner world with greater mindfulness, gratitude, and consideration for others.

Our Journey

Our journey begins in Paro, a historic and sacred town, where we gather for cultural and safety orientation before setting out to explore Bhutan.

In Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, we learn about the country’s educational system and commitment to cultural preservation—both central pillars of Gross National Happiness (GNH). We’ll visit the Choki Traditional Art School and ELC High School, gain insights from educators, and join nuns for evening prayers and a mindful walk.

At the Motithang Takin Preserve, we encounter Bhutan’s national animal before taking a scenic drive to Punakha. There, we visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, a revered fortress at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers, and cross Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge for breathtaking views.

In Gangtey, we explore the Black-Necked Crane Center and Gangtey Goenba Monastery. A nature hike, vegetable harvesting, and a Bhutanese cooking lesson with local farmers further connect us to daily life and traditions.

At Taphu (Flying Mountain) Monastery, we spend a day with young monks—sharing lunch, playing soccer, and participating in mindfulness activities—before returning to Paro. Our journey concludes with a hike to the iconic Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside, where we reflect on our time in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
