A Custom School Program

14 Days

Traveling from the modern hubs of Shanghai and Hangzhou to a remote village in Yunnan Province, students will see how cutting-edge forms of technology, such as mobile banking, e-commerce, AI, smart agriculture, and digital education, shape everyday life in China. Through conversations with startup founders, traditional artisans, rural farmers, Tibetan Buddhist monks, and urban planners, students will gain diverse perspectives on China’s rapid digital transformation and see firsthand how communities have transformed and adapted. They will also reflect on tradition versus innovation, discussing how technology influences cultural preservation, migration, and environmental sustainability.

Culture, Technology, and Community Sustainability

If you want to understand the world we live in, there’s no way to ignore China. In the words of Lao Tzu, “a path traveled is no longer the same path, a road traveled is no longer the same road.” Old neighborhoods of wooden houses are demolished to make way for 80-story buildings. Streets once filled with bicycles are now jammed with shiny new cars. Buddhist monks read ancient sutras from iPads, and millions of rural farmers move between home and work in the city to support their families. New highways, rail lines, and airports are under construction virtually all the time, everywhere, in a race to keep up with 1.4 billion people on the move.

This program is a holistic cultural immersion. During the course, students should expect to be deeply engaged with the people and places that surround them. Open and curious interaction with a carefully guided host of activities will provide students with opportunities for cultivating personal leadership, a deepened sense of self, and a more developed understanding of their own place in a global community.

Our Journey

Our journey begins in Moganshan, a scenic countryside area outside Shanghai. Orientation activities will include establishing group goals, framing cultural norms, and reviewing health and safety information. We will explore the village, learn about local tourism, interview residents on Shanghai traditions, and hike in the bamboo forests.

In Shanghai, we will delve into “Smart City” concepts, meeting urban planners to discuss AI-integrated infrastructure and experiencing digital retail at Alibaba’s Hema Smart Supermarket. We will explore the question “How do old stories live in new cities?” contrasting high-tech modernity at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park with cultural preservation at Yu Garden, the Old City Bazaar, and the Bund.

Next, we travel to Hangzhou to visit Alibaba’s headquarters, learning about e-commerce. We will hike along the Longjing tea terraces and visit an eco-tech tea farm, discussing technology’s role in preserving tradition.

We then fly to Lijiang for a homestay in Nanyao village, a Naxi ethnic community on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. While there, we connect with local families, learn about traditional life, and discuss the impact of smartphones and mobile payments on work and migration. We also engage in traditional agriculture, share home-cooked meals, hike on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and visit a Tibetan Buddhist monastery to learn how technology influences monastic life.

We spend our final days in Lijiang Old Town, a UNESCO site. The program concludes with reflection activities that will deepen our experiences and begin to incorporate our learning into our lives back home.
