Cambodia Educator Proposed Itinerary

Day 1-2 Our journey begins in the bustle and bright lights of the capital city of Phnom Penh. On the first day we will meet in the morning and spend the day having an orientation to this fascinating culture and country, and exploring the local markets. The next day is when we will dive into Cambodia’s recent brutal past, visiting the S-21 prison camp and the Killing Fields, exploring the themes of justice and reconciliation and how this has impacted Cambodia’s development today.
Days 3-4 Leaving the city, we head south to the coastal town of Kampot. Here we will visit an inspiring inclusive education project, and start to dive into the main themes of our trip. We will have the chance to take a boat out to a mangrove conservation project and learn about how fishing communities are tackling climate change.
Days 5-6 From Kampot we travel to Kirirom National Park to stay in the ecotourism site of Chambok. Set against the backdrop of virgin forest and dramatic waterfalls, we will be hosted by the local community and stay in traditional stilted wooden houses. Our days will be spent going on short hikes, exploring the local area on “iron cows” and learning about what actions the community have taken to manage their natural resources.
Days 7-10 Traveling up to the northwest part of the country, the final part of our trip will be spent exploring both the ancient and modern sides of the city of Siem Reap. We will visit a local education organization and explore how they are tackling migration through youth empowerment. And of course we will explore the magnificent wonder of Angkor Wat. We will also be turning our attention to the theme of “transference” – reflecting on what we have learned and how it will affect our lives and teaching practice going forward.
