WHERE THERE BE DRAGONS Nepal Arts Summer Program Dates: 27 June-27 July Rough Itinerary (subject to wonderful and exciting changes!) 27 June: Students meet in New York. Flight via Brussles departing JFK at 6:10pm 28 June: In the air…arriving Delhi at 9:40pm. 29 June: Early morning flight Delhi-Kathmandu. Re-pack for 1 week excursion to remote, culturally rich middle-hills villages. Road trip to the Newari village of Bandipur for orientation! 30 June: Bandipur orientation: Welcome to Nepal and to our group! Start Nepali language classes. Hike to Siddha cave, one of the largest limestone caverns in the Himalayas. 1 July: Bandipur orientation. Hike to Magar village to see traditional cultural dances. 2 July: Drive to Tansen via Waling (Amrit’s village where we’ll have lunch!). Enter homestays in pairs. 3 July: Explore Tansen town (the “Pearl of Palpa” district): visit the newly constructed Tansen palace (original was destroyed by the Maoists in 2006), meet with local artists about metalsmithing and Dhaka textile weaving, and meet with the head of ecotourism in Palpa to discuss development and heritage preservation. 4 July: Hike to Rani Ghat, a palace monument of love the some deem the “Taj Mahal of Nepal,” along the snaking Kaligandaki river. Sunrise may offer spectacular views of the Annapurna range. 5 July: Hike to Arghali, stopping at various villages en route. Taste “mui,” the famous local yoghurt! 6 July: Drive to Lumbini, Lord Buddha’s birthplace. Taste the diversity of Buddhist heritage by exploring German, Thai, Burmese, Chinese, Japanese and many other temples sponsored by the world Buddhist communities. 7 July: Bus back to Kathmandu. 8 July: Enter Patan homestays! 9 July: Morning Nepali language and Kathmandu guest lecture program begins. Meet with the Sumeru Art Group, a highly recognized artisan group in Patan, about the artistic traditions and various crafts of the Kathmandu valley. Start ISPs with local Patan artists in the afternoon! 10 July: Language, lecture, ISPs. (This daily morning program will include “Living Language Lessons: Nepali,” lectures and discussions with local and international artists, development workers, academics, and your very own instructors about various aspects of Nepali culture, history, politics, environment, and art). 11 July: Patan walking tour including a visit to the Patan museum. Afternoon with homestay families. 12 July: Group outing: Bhaktapur World Heritage site, Thimi ceramics center. Meeting with a local ceramic artist who has reached out to the community to improve water quality through producing ceramic water filters. 13 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 14 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 15 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 16 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 17 July: Living language, lecture: morning visit with Dr. Arayal to Pashupati temple, one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites. Intro to Hinduism. ISPs in afternoon. 18 July: Group outing to Dakshin Kali and Pharping. Dakshin Kali is one of the main Hindu temples dedicated to goddess Kali. Pharping is a Buddhist hillside retreat center famous for magical meditation caves. 19 July: Homestay family day 20 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 21 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 22 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 23 July: Living language, lecture, ISPs 24 July: ISP presentations and group time 25 July: Final party with homestay families, ISP mentors, and friends. 26 July: Group departs KTM! Flight to Delhi at 3:45 pm 27 July: Flight back to JFK
